Major Internet Outage Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Applications

A widespread online failure has affected dozens sites and mobile apps worldwide, and users noting troubles accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s cloud computing service.

The impacted services include Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-owned platforms such as its key e-commerce platform and the Ring device manufacturer.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was impacted as well as its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and further notifications of issues using the the tax authority website on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, many Ring users used online platforms to complain their doorbells were not working.

In the UK alone, accounts of issues on specific applications ran into the tens of thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the problem originated in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a section that supplies vital web framework for a host of firms, who lease space on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global online services service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (8am BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The widespread consequence was seen to affect apps around the world, with the outage tracking website showing outages with the same sites in different parts of the world.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks internet outages, also reported a surge in issues on Monday morning, and numerous instances found in the state of Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the problems started.
