Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection But McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn internationals, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in July.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are not included due to injury, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the summer tour.
Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new member in the 34-player squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "cover".
Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous meeting, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a largely experienced selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre choices. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.
Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in the English city previously.
McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.
Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and veteran Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.
Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris if the captain does not regain fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
